We use electricity, but we hardly ever think of it. Until there's a blackout, that is. CUP received a grant to work with Queens high school students impacted by the Northwest Queens blackout of 2006 to investigate where our electricity comes from. I developed this project with teaching artist Samantha Contis. Students from Aviation High School peered down manholes, interviewed Con Edison, visited power plants and an upstate monitoring center to follow the energy supply chain. Together with designer Ben Critton, we developed a poster that explains how electricity goes from natural resources to your room, and who calls the shots along the way. The poster was translated into the six most commonly spoken languages in Queens.
